Writing for the Popular Press:
A Workshop for Feminist Scholars and Grassroots Leaders

Writing for the popular press presents an important opportunity for feminist scholars and grassroots leaders to expand public knowledge and influence public discourse on critical issues within the current political landscape. In this workshop sponsored by Ms. and Smith College’s Program for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality, Ms. editors and leading feminist scholars who have published in progressive mainstream media will offer practical guidance for translating your research into compelling articles for a popular audience.

Workshop participants will be fully funded, including travel, food, and lodging for the two-and-a-half-day in-person workshop at Smith College to be held in July 2026.

The workshop includes the following virtual components, occurring over two months and culminating in a two-day in-person workshop on Monday, July 13 – Wednesday, July 15, 2026.

  • Webinar 1: Introduction to Writing for the Popular Press, How to Write a Pitch
  • Webinar 2: How to Translate Your Research: Workshopping Pitches (feedback from Ms. editors and scholars)
  • Webinar 3: From Pitch to Article: A Step-by-Step Guide
  • Participants post their draft articles to a discussion board to prepare for the in-person workshop
  • Two and a half-day in-person workshop with Ms. writers and editors
  • Participants stay in touch and receive follow-up from workshop leaders and/or their assigned editor following the workshop
